Democrats Sweep Harris County Elections, Reinforcing Leadership
In the recent Harris County elections in Texas, Democrats secured major victories across key positions, reinforcing their leadership within the county.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez won a third term by defeating former Houston City Council member Mike Knox, garnering 53.13% of the vote. Gonzalez, a former Houston Police Department sergeant and City Council member, has been regarded as one of the county’s most popular officials.
County Attorney Christian Menefee secured a second term with a narrow victory of 50.46% over challenger Jacqueline Lucci Smith. Menefee, who first took office in 2020, has become known for representing the county in significant legal matters, including environmental lawsuits and battles with the state government over local programs and policies.
Annette Ramirez claimed the role of County Tax Assessor-Collector by defeating former Commissioner Steve Radack with 51.12% of the vote. As an attorney and assistant general counsel for Aldine ISD, Ramirez has outlined her priorities to include focusing on corporate tax collections, reducing fees for delinquent taxpayers, and addressing predatory tax lien practices.
Commissioner Rodney Ellis won re-election to represent Precinct 1, securing a commanding 71.53% of the vote against challenger Gerry Vander-Lyn. Ellis, who has served as commissioner since 2016, is noted for his impactful policies, such as directing flood infrastructure funding to underserved communities and promoting the county’s guaranteed income pilot program.
These victories highlight the sustained Democratic influence in Harris County's political landscape, reinforcing the party’s priorities and leadership.
