Historic Election Win in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District
Shomari Figures has secured a historic victory in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District after the state redrew the district boundaries in response to a Supreme Court ruling. The Supreme Court had ordered Alabama to revise its congressional map, originally drawn by Republicans, citing probable discrimination against Black voters. The newly drawn 2nd District now holds a majority Black population.
Figures, a Democrat, was chosen by the district's residents to represent them, marking a significant milestone in Alabama’s political landscape. His election makes state history, as Alabama will have two Black congressional representatives serving simultaneously for the first time. Figures will join Terri Sewell, also a Democrat, in the state’s House delegation.
