Historic Elections Bring New Milestones for Black Women in the U.S. Senate

Maryland and Delaware made history by electing Black women to the U.S. Senate. Maryland voters chose Angela Alsobrooks, while Delaware elected Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, both Democrats. These victories double the number of Black women ever elected to the Senate from two to four.

Carol Moseley Braun was the first in 1992, followed by Kamala Harris in 2016. Laphonza Butler, appointed in 2023, did not seek election. Alsobrooks and Blunt Rochester, experienced leaders, will be the first to serve simultaneously, focusing on key issues such as prescription drug affordability and maternal health.
